Melanie Thomas, Senior Climate Change Consultant recently presented 'The role of Land Use Planning in Teal and Blue Carbon Projects'. 

Her presentation highlighted the vital role planners and coastal wetlands play in reducing risks associated with climate change by adopting a carbon sequestration approach in the rehabilitations of low-lying agricultural land.

Melanie has worked in climate change and environmental management for over 17 years for Local, State and the Australian Government. Melanie has a Masters degree certified by the Planning Institute of Australia.

Melanie is on the IPWEA NSW & ACT Environment and Sustainability Panel and is a member of MECLA Working Group 3&4 Knowledge and Language. She is also a member of the French-Australian Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Melanie led two projects partnering with IPWEA to develop Practice Note 12.1 and Practice Note 12.2, which provide guidance on building climate resilience into infrastructure assets. She was also a reviewer of IPWEA Practice Note 13 which relates to the circular economy. Melanie has undertaken climate change risk assessments and climate change adaptation strategic planning for Sydney councils.

Melanie has worked on NSW household resilience and coastal projects including teal and blue carbon wetland projects with the use of BlueCAM.
